Network Equipment Vendors Need Web Services Too,
Says Internet Research Group

Los Altos, Calif., January 10, 2003 – Internet Research Group (Los Altos, California) announced the publication of a new subscription research report “Why Networks Need Web Services Now.” Web Services is at best a confusing topic, and usually discussed in the context of network-enabled applications. Network equipment vendors have struggled with the question of how to make networks better and more valuable for Web Services applications. This study flips that question around and looks at how Web Services can make networks better, and that turns out to be an unexpectedly interesting perspective.

“In previous work we’ve described why network customers want networks that are at the same time better and cheaper to operate” said John Katsaros, IRG co-founder. “One way to achieve that end is through better integration of the network components. From that perspective it’s not surprising that Web services technology is valuable.”

“The most exciting aspect of this study is where this might all lead” noted Peter Christy, IRG co-founder. “Making network-enabled applications perform well in a cost-effective fashion is extremely challenging, largely because few network people understand application technology well, and few IT people really understand the issues in network operation. Our work suggests that this relatively simple first step could be the catalyst for bridging these two disciplines much more effectively, and the results of that could be quite spectacular.”
